What’s weird is that at my hospital , ICU nurses don’t take more than 4 patients in med surg. But if a med surg nurse is floated to a higher level like PCU , they still have to take a full load up there. Make it make sense.

I used to work med surg at my hospital and could take up to 6. But now I’m ICU and if we get floated out, we only go to the cardiac floors and can only take 3 patients.

At my hospital icu can’t float to med surg. So they will float to pcu and then pcu will float to med surg.

Med-surg is crazy to me! The patients walk to the bathroom on their own! Our ICU doesn’t even have a bathroom—you get a commode that I have to order. And you can’t get out of bed without me, are you kidding me? My float to med-surg was like going to the twilight zone and extremely uncomfortable. I would have been so anxious with more than 3 patients. Nice team just no idea how the work flow goes. God bless you floor nurses!
