@the.history.fox: FULL EPISODE ON YOUTUBE. In April 1916 Ernest Shackleton was stranded on Elephant Island in the Southern Ocean with twenty-seven other men. Their ship, the Endurance, had been crushed by Antarctic ice. They had been at sea for over a year. Nobody knew they existed and nobody was coming. He took five men in a 22-foot lifeboat called the James Caird and pushed out into 800 miles of the worst sea on Earth to fetch help. His navigator, Frank Worsley, had only four chances during the entire voyage to take a sun sight with a sextant. He was kneeling in a boat that was throwing itself in every direction, his hands frozen, the sun visible for seconds at a time through cloud. He hit the island exactly where he had calculated it would be. Then the three strongest men crossed the uncharted interior of South Georgia in 36 hours without sleep, walked into a Norwegian whaling station, and Shackleton said: my name is Shackleton. The station manager turned away and wept. Every man came home. #HistoryTok #BritishHistory #Shackleton #Endurance #ExplorationHistory
