not to mention AFTER the phone call ash questions how professor oak knew sammy's nickname. then it goes to oak's lab where someone asks about a drawing professor oak has and oak literally says "oh thats my old sketchbook" and it shows the drawing.... the one sammy made of celebi and pikachu snoozing together. movie literally spells it out at the very end.

I have a theory that ash wasn't technically late. oak purposely told him the wrong time so he would think he was late. Ash was clumsy and lazy so it's possible he just forgot what time oak told him and oak just gaslighted him into thinking he was late.
