I started replaying the game, charles said yes to him everytime in the beginning. I think that's why Arthur agreed later on because he saw the effort charles put onto him without thinking. He could sense the loyalty.

I feel like, because Charles is part native, he has a deep level of respect and understanding during the current time of the natives fighting for land anyway. So adding him to the gang was kind of like a peace of mind for Arthur knowing that everyone no matter the race are good people and Charles is that person. And that’s why Arthur (playing as high honor) is so kind to everyone
