@prescribeorpass: Statins don’t lower cholesterol by travelling into your arteries and scrubbing cholesterol off the walls. They work mainly in the liver by reducing cholesterol production and increasing LDL receptors, allowing the liver to remove more LDL from blood as it passes through. So whether a statin crosses into the brain doesn’t automatically tell us anything about dementia risk. #statins #dementia
my daughter has hyperfamilar cholesterolsemia (spelling?) shes on statins, is there anything I can do naturally to help her shes already on a low fat diet but im worried shes not eating enough good fats to help her brain. is that a thing?

I'm still scared of statins. To be honest I truly can not tell you where or what I heard about the dangers of using statin drugs. It was many years ago and worked very well apparently.

I’m afraid of muscle pains on stains. I have high cholesterol but a zero calcium heart score. But what are the risks ?

Tiny reduction in cardiovascular risk for almost everyone.

Some statins like Atorvastatin can enter the brain and cause memory issues, difficulty concentrating, and brain fog — regardless of whether or not they directly affect brain cholesterol. So don’t mock people’s questions with a kind of scientific shell game. They can affect the brain. I had these side effects and it was a big problem.

Hi this video has some inaccuracies. The description of the primary mechanism of statins lowering cholesterol (lowering LDL-ApoB by upregulation of LDLRs secondary to a reduction in hepatic cholesterol synthesis by inhibiting HMGcoAR) is correct. However statins do enter brain cells just as they enter almost every cell in the body but it’s the fact that they primarily act in the liver that means they don’t reduce cholesterol synthesis in other peripheral cells to any significant degree (vast majority of the time) and most peripheral cells make all the cholesterol they ever need. Even hydrophillic statins in the steady state cross the BBB and enter the brain. In terms of dementia and Alzheimer’s risk the observational data suggest no effect or even that statins reduce risk so as no RCTs can’t conclude for certain but it is highly likely it lowers risk or has no effect. They definitely lower risk of vascular dementia by lowering risk of stroke and TIA. A tiny subsection of individuals statins do significantly lower brain cholesterol synthesis in the brain but this can be monitored by plasma desmosterol - this is a small minority but if desmosterol is low this is a concerning risk factor for Alzheimer’s !! Therefore it appears to much or very rarely too little cholesterol is a risk. Btw this is not a reason to not use statins as in vast majority of cases it’s beneficial as observational data shows but it is an argument to monitor desmosterol

I am Simone with PBC with cholesterol that kept increasing no matter what diet or exercise I did. then my blood pressure increased, post menopausal, late 60s a bit overweight I finally made the decision to take a statin as my risk factors for heart attack or stroke where high. my cholesterol decreased to normal range in 6 months. so I feel that is 1 less risk factors now, my blood pressure well controlled on tablets. I am now on a new liver medication oblitec ( I think that is how you say it) 1 side effect is why gain and I feel I have some extra around my middle. even though scales haven't changed.

Cholesterol is not the cause of cardiovascular disease, it's a component. Inflammation is the cause isn't it!

@PrescribeOrPass so we’re lowering our systemic cholesterol i get that but if you lower the cholesterol everywhere ( brain included), dose that increase the risk of dementia?.
