Barker did say that it wasn’t like an entity but more that the wish was evil. And I think her obsession is supposed to be a reflection of how obsessed he is with the idea of her.

It’s been confirmed that she’s not possessed by a demon or anything like that it’s just the wish created a dark version of her that takes over her and it was getting stronger over time it was just a powerful wish that was worded very poorly because remember other people made wishes and nothing bad happened to them

I disagree about the film being surface level, I think it just leaves a lot up for interpretation and personally that's the thing that's kept me thinking about it like all those questions, unfortunately they probably also did it to leave room for spinoffs but that's besides the point

you will notice at the start of the movie that bear is the one obsessed with nikki by just how he worded his wish— "i wish nikki would love me more than anyone else in the world"—regardless if you know that the wish will come true or not, you WILL NOT word your wish like that if you just simply have a happy crush on someone
