Hangzhou may be one of the most effectively marketed cities in China. Its public image is carefully crafted to attract talent, investment, tourists, and foreign residents. On the surface, it looks modern, innovative, prosperous, and highly livable.
Yet after spending ten years living and working there, I often feel that the reality falls far short of the branding. The city can feel superficial and overly focused on appearances. The air quality is not as good as advertised, social interactions often feel cold and transactional, the pace of life is exhausting, competition is relentless, scams are not uncommon, and concerns about food safety remain.
For me, the biggest disappointment is not any single problem, but the contrast between the city’s carefully promoted image and the reality experienced by many ordinary residents. The gap between expectation and reality is what stands out the most.
As a tourist or someone staying for a short period without work-related pressures, Hangzhou can be a wonderful place to experience. The city offers beautiful scenery, modern infrastructure, and many conveniences that are easy to appreciate at first glance.
However, in my personal experience, living and working there long-term is an entirely different reality. Once the novelty wears off, you are left facing the pressures of daily life, an extremely competitive environment, constant career stress, rising living costs, and a social atmosphere that can often feel distant and indifferent. Over time, these challenges can outweigh many of the advantages that the city is known for.
After nearly a decade of living there, I would not describe Hangzhou as the ideal city that many promotional campaigns portray. For me, the difference between the image and the reality is enormous. While it may be a pleasant place to visit or stay temporarily, I believe that long-term living and working there can be a deeply frustrating experience. In my view, what appears to be a dream city from the outside can become something closer to a disaster once you have to build your life and career there.
