The Jaffna Public Library was not just a building filled with books. It was a treasure house of Tamil culture, knowledge, and history. Established in 1933, it grew to become one of the finest libraries in Asia, housing nearly 97,000 books, rare manuscripts, ancient palm-leaf documents, newspapers, and irreplaceable records of Tamil heritage. During a period of rising ethnic tensions, the library was set on fire and completely destroyed. The flames consumed centuries of knowledge and history within a single night. Rare documents that could never be replaced were reduced to ashes. For many Tamils, the destruction of the library was more than the loss of a building—it was the loss of a cultural memory, a symbol of identity, and a painful reminder of the divisions that existed at the time. Today, the library has been rebuilt and stands once again in Jaffna. Yet the memory of what was lost continues to live on in the hearts of many people.
