Trump’s over-the-top military birthday parade in D.C. fell flat Saturday, with a sparse turnout and a growing chorus of online mockery. Despite a staggering estimated price tag of $45 million, turnout near the Washington Monument was visibly underwhelming — and made worse by protests and poor weather. 
Organizers expected 200,000. But estimates put actual crowd size well below that. The parade, touted by Trump as a patriotic spectacle to mark the U.S. military’s 250th anniversary, instead showcased the public's apathy toward his performative nationalism. Crowds were minimal despite military fanfare, historical reenactors, and the presence of armored tanks. DC residents called the turnout “embarrassing,” especially considering the massive costs and the President’s obsession with optics. “Kind of hilarious, in waste of my tax money kind of way,” one comment said. 
Progressive commentators and immigration advocates were quick to note the contrast between Trump’s fantasy of grandeur and the cold reality on the ground. Meanwhile, the event’s disruptions extended beyond poor attendance. The military’s tanks risked damaging DC roads — a potential cost of up to $16 million on top of the parade’s already bloated budget. 
While Trump tried to flex patriotism on his 79th birthday, the American public — and the skies — just weren’t buying it.
