@oddityvault72: The Snuffleupagus ghost pipefish (Solenostomus snuffleupagus) is a newly described marine species named after the Sesame Street character due to its long, trunk-like snout and shaggy, hair-like skin filaments. Measuring only 4 to 5 centimeters long, this tiny predator perfectly mimics floating red macroalgae to ambush small crustaceans in the South Pacific and Great Barrier Reef. Though first spotted in 2001, it took over two decades of DNA testing and CT scans to officially confirm it as a distinct species. Unlike their seahorse cousins where males carry the young, it is the female Snuffleupagus ghost pipefish that broods the eggs in a specialized pouch formed by her fins. #fish #newspecies #greatbarrierreef #crustaceans #naturelovers
