At the House of Assembly complex, the protesting maidens popular known as Umuada in Igbo culture as well as their brothers wives known as Alutaridi cladded in all black attire, urged the state House of Assembly leadership to call the traditional ruler of Umuopia- Akokwa, Eze Don Opuruozor, Eze Lambert Emechebe of Owerre- Akokwa autonomous community and Eze Charles Biere of Umuezeaga- Akokwa autonomous community. Umuada Akokwa protest, ask govt to call traditional rulers to order Chidiebube Okeoma, Owerri Scores of maidens of Akokwa clan in the Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State on Wednesday stormed the State House of Assembly complex in Owerri as well as the state ministry of Local Government and chieftaincy affairs in Owerri in protest against three out of the six traditional rulers in the clan. The leader of the delegation, Mrs Fidelia Ezeobiaeri, told the clerk of the Parliament, Chinelo Emeghara who received them, that the traditional rulers were intimidating and surprising them for urging them to resolve a community dispute that rose after a botched Town election in the clan. She said that the three traditional rulers raised a frivolous petition to the police, tagging them "terrorists" for asking for peace to return in the area. Asking the Parliament to call the three traditional rulers to order, Ezeobiaeri, disclosed that the three traditional rulers had also sued at a high court in Owerri, the state capital. The woman leader of Alutaridi Akokwa, Dame Juliana Onwuneme, said that while the three other traditional rulers agreed with them that peace be returned in the clan, the other three traditional rulers who took them to court and petitioned them before the police authorities in Owerri had allegedly distorted every move they had made for peace to return in Akokwa clan. She said " we passionately appeal to your office to intervene urgently before the situation deteriorates further and before avoidable tensions lead to consequences that may be difficult to reverse. "We remain law abiding citizens committed to peaceful coexistence and confident that your timely intervention will help restore lasting peace and stability in Akokwa na Ohaigiri." The clerk of the Parliament thanked them for being peaceful and disclosed that their compliant would be referred to appropriate committee of the Parliament for legislative actions. At the ministry of Local Government and chieftaincy affairs, Mrs Ifeoma Umeh, said that the three traditional rulers were intimidating them a lot . She asked the authorities to look into their petition and call the traditional rulers to order. Collins Nkwocha, who is the Head Of Department of Chieftaincy affairs Department in the ministry, assured the protesting women that their compliant would be attended to by the ministry.
