SLAJ Condemns SLPP Publicity Secretary’s Remarks Against Journalist Victor Jones The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has expressed serious concern over public statements made by Moses Sellu Mambu, the National Publicity Secretary of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), regarding journalist Victor Jones of AYV Media Empire. The dispute stems from Mambu’s appearance on Liberty TV’s Online Breakfast Show on October 19, 2026. During the broadcast, Mambu allegedly accused Jones of pursuing an agenda against the SLPP and conspired with fellow journalist Thomas Dixon to submit a false report to SLAJ. Following a formal complaint from Jones on October 21, SLAJ Secretary-General Edward Farah Marah contacted Mambu for a response. Mambu reportedly clarified that his "agenda" remarks were directed at media houses broadly, rather than Jones personally. However, he maintained his allegation that Jones and Dixon had conspired to file a false report against him. After reviewing video evidence of the broadcast and checking its internal records, SLAJ stated it found no evidence of a false report submitted by either journalist. The association firmly rejected the allegation as "unsupported." SLAJ emphasized that publicly associating a named journalist with hostility toward a ruling party in an already polarized environment poses a severe risk. The association warned that such rhetoric exposes media practitioners to intimidation, harassment, and threats to their personal safety. “Journalists have a constitutional responsibility to inform the public, scrutinise those in authority and hold power to account,” said SLAJ President Alhaji Manika Kamara. “Their professional work should not be portrayed as an agenda against a political party just because their reporting may be critical or uncomfortable.” SLAJ is calling on political leaders to exercise restraint and ensure their public statements do not encourage hostility toward the press. Specifically, the association urged Mambu to respect the independence and professional role of journalists, advising that any grievances involving the media be addressed through constructive engagement and established complaint mechanisms. #fybシ #sierraleonetiktok🇸🇱 #salonetiktok #africa #trending
