As both an upstater and nyc-er, upstate is used to differ between New York the city and New York the state. For example, when you say “potsdam, in upstate New York”, it’s so non-ny people understand that potsdam is a town in the state of New York, and not a neighborhood in the city of New York City

In Michigan we have the UP, then the lower peninsula is catorgorized by Up North, Central, the thumb, and Southern Michigan

Upstate SC is VERY much a thing!! There is upstate, midlands and low state/low country. The upstate is near the mountains the midlands is where the capital is and where the hills lessen and the low state/ low country is the coast!!

Though i believe SC has an upstate (not sure) I believe NY has update NY to separate it from the city, everyone hears new york and IMMEDIATELY assumes you’re from the city when that’s like 2% of the entire state 😭😭

Upstate SC is where Greenville is located! lots of mountain area, a waterfall in downtown, and tons of parks. it's a beautiful place to visit (but please don't move here)
