Not only is it fun, but it’s also a great way to break up static positions like sit, drop, and stand. As your training progresses, you can start linking behaviours together to create flow, boost engagement, and keep your dog motivated to work with you. One thing many people don’t realise is that spin and twirl are actually two different skills. Your dog is turning in two different directions, so each behaviour should have its own unique hand signal and verbal cue. A common mistake is using the same hand gesture for both directions and expecting the dog to understand the difference. This can become confusing and often results in the dog guessing which way to turn. To teach it: ✅ Start with a treat in your hand. ✅ Slowly lure your dog in a full circle. ✅ Mark and reward as soon as they complete the turn. ✅ Repeat until the movement becomes smooth. ✅ Add a verbal cue such as “Spin.” ✅ Introduce a different hand signal and cue for the opposite direction, such as “Twirl.” Keep your sessions short, fun, and successful.
