Middle miles :
Early retirement is a dream for many, and I can personally attest to the fact that it IS all it’s cracked up to be - if you plan and prepare.
But like most big life decisions, it comes with both rewards and realities.
As someone who retired early (after being laid off at 55), I’ve realized a few things. There are a lot of PROS, but also a few CONS. Here’s how I’d break it down.
The Pros:
🔹More time freedom (the big one) — to travel, explore hobbies, or simply slow down. After working for years, it’s incredibly freeing to control your own time.
🔹Better health & lower stress — leaving a demanding job can improve both physical and mental well-being if you are intentional about it.
🔹 Time for new pursuits — starting a side business, volunteering, or learning something completely new. My part-time side business allows me to remain retired and it is so interesting that it doesn’t feel like work.
The Cons:
🔸Healthcare costs — before Medicare kicks in, this can be a big one.
🔸Reduced Social Security benefits — claiming early means smaller monthly checks.
🔸Longer retirement horizon — your savings need to last possibly 30+ years.
🔸Loss of identity or purpose — many underestimate how tied their sense of self is to their career.
The KEY is planning ahead. Know your numbers, research your options, and build flexible income streams that support the lifestyle you want.
Early retirement can absolutely work—and I personally feel the Pros outweigh the Cons— but it takes vision, intention, and balance.
