@drdrewprovan: Oral iron tablets take many months to raise ferritin and even longer if you want a ferritin of 70-100micrograms per litre. #medicine #hematology #irondeficiency #oraliron #fyp

Dr Carys Sonnenberg :
So many of my female patients have low ferritin levels due to heavy periods and feel exhausted. In GP we rarely give iron infusions but I will certainly speak with our local haematologists as you’re absolutely right. I hardly ever see anyone correct their iron level to 70-100 with use of oral iron supplements. Most people are taking it incorrectly and inconsistently. Thank you for a great post

I have been on ferrous fumerate for 6 months now, my ferritin was 12, it’s now 52, I take them every other day first thing in the morning with vitamin C. I am being retested in another 3 months

Why don’t they mix the iron supplements with something that helps combat the constipation it causes? Iron tablets are horrific for constipation!

I’ve been prescribed Ferric Maltol now as my tummy didn’t agree with the ferrous sulphate. Wondering if they will take longer.

Mine is consistently 17, I’ve been on iron tablets for a year and a half. Extremely heavy periods due to adenomyosis and have done for 16 years. At what point could I be offered infusions?

If asked if low folate can also cause similar symptoms, now just read low vit d can also cause same. And vit d is needed for iron absorption. Be great

What if your ferritin is 85 but your iron is 4 and your transferrin saturation is 7%?

What happens if your hemoglobin and hematocrit end up in the high normal range or high, but your ferritin remains low. How do you get your ferritin up without getting other markers into the high dangerous zone?

Is it ideal to take the tablets every other day? I've heard this is better as the chances of absorption are better ( and less constipation)

Hypothetically if you did take iron tablets ‘perfectly’ but you have an extremely heavy period every 31 days would you ever be able to get your ferritin levels above 70-100+?
