cr: @🪖 Zagros Neolithic farmers, originating around 10,000 years ago in the eastern Fertile Crescent (modern-day western Iran and Iraq), were pioneering agriculturalists and pastoralists. Primarily domesticating goats and growing barley, they were genetically distinct from European farmers and left a profound legacy in modern Middle Eastern and South Asian populations. Origins and Lifestyle The central Zagros region—with key archaeological sites like Ganj Dareh, Tepe Abdul Hosein, and Wezmeh Cave—was one of the earliest cradles of the Neolithic Revolution. Unlike the farmers in Anatolia and the Levant who largely depended on wheat and later developed expansive towns, early Zagros populations relied heavily on goat herding and two-row barley. They were sedentary pioneers who built permanent mudbrick structures and independently developed early agricultural and pastoral economies Genetic Distinctness and Legacy DNA extracted from ancient Zagros skeletons, such as a 10,000-year-old woman from Ganj Dareh (GD13A), revealed an astonishing fact: Zagros farmers were genetically completely independent from the Anatolian farmers who settled Europe. These two distinct populations, separated by tens of thousands of years of biological divergence, invented farming simultaneously without meaningful genetic connection. Rather than migrating westward into Europe, the Zagros farmers expanded eastward. Their genetic legacy is a core foundation of modern populations, remaining most prominent in Iranian Zoroastrians, Baloch, and Afghan populations, while also forming a major ancestry component in the ancient Indus Valley Civilization and modern South Asians. #ZNF #Zagrosians #Iran #History #genetics
