This incident exposed the aircraft’s radar and avionics to the West, forcing the Soviet Union to modernize its fleet. Existing MiG-25P aircraft were upgraded into the PDS standard with improved radar, avionics, and better resistance to jamming. Its role is high-speed, high-altitude interception, designed to counter reconnaissance aircraft and strategic bombers. The PDS is essentially a modernized MiG-25P, with capabilities close to the MiG-25PD but converted from older airframes rather than newly built.
