The Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary, celebrated annually on 12 September, honours the spiritual dignity, power, and sweetness of the sacred name borne by the Mother of Our Redeemer. In Christian tradition, the name Mary (from the Hebrew Miryam) is associated with meanings such as "star of the sea", "lady", and "beloved of God". Just as the Holy Name of Jesus is revered above all names, the name of His holy Mother has been invoked by believers for centuries as a source of grace, comfort in affliction, and protection against spiritual dangers. The feast was first approved in Spain in 1513 and gradually spread throughout Europe. It entered the universal calendar of the Roman Catholic Church in 1683, instituted by Pope Innocent XI following the crucial relief of Vienna from siege by Ottoman forces. Christian armies under the leadership of King John III Sobieski of Poland placed themselves under the protection of Our Lady, achieving a monumental victory that secured Christendom. In gratitude, Pope Innocent XI extended the feast to the entire Church. Restored to the Roman General Calendar as an optional memorial by Pope Saint John Paul II in 2002, the feast reminds the faithful of the power of maternal intercession. It invites Christians to pronounce Mary's name with deep reverence, affection, and trust in her constant care. Holy Mary, whose sacred name brings peace to the troubled and strength to the faithful, pray for us that we may honour your name with love and find refuge in your maternal protection!
