Calling a performance "boring" in a masterclass isn't teaching, it's just an ego trip. Imagine calling a performance boring enough to sleep to, considering Bach wrote the Goldberg Variations specifically for an insomniac.

That’s a very negative way to critique. And the teacher is not connecting to the student’s perspective and vision. They don’t look for what the student is trying to do or why they do what they do. The teacher just hears the absence of what they expect ‘up to standard’ to sound like. So they assume there’s something missing. Not to mention, the teacher have zero specific examples of what he’s looking for in the dynamics and articulation and not-‘boring’ sound they want. This is a recipe for throwing style elements into the dark, hoping to stumble on what the teacher is looking for. I disagree heavily with this. I highly doubt there’s ’no music.’ There’s probably different music than what he expects and maybe some elements that are still coming into focus. The teacher’s Job is to appreciate and cultivate that, not pretend it’s not there. And for sure, no insulting the student. That rarely causes growth without the student pushing themselves out of fear of failure, which only some nervous systems do when faced with this. But it almost always causes emotional scars. It’s time for the music community to stop viewing each other as semi-built houses and start viewing each other as beautiful eternal landscapes to discover beneath the trees of bias, difference, and development. Period.

Translating for non-Russians: “that was pretty good! You played super clean. It would just be great to maybe add some more dynamics in the future but you did really well.”

From the perspective of an experienced piano pedagogue and classical pianist, such criticism is deeply unhelpful. To call a student’s work simply “boring” gives no real direction and can damage confidence. A teacher should describe the impression carefully, then show concretely how the playing could become more differentiated, expressive, and alive. That is where learning begins.

Instead of using the phrase, your performance is… Say “ consider this idea, play this here here and here to bring out the beauty”, teachers need to inspire from time to time.
