@mo.and.the.jungle.shelf: That old saying about plants really is true: “The first year they sleep, the second year they creep, and the third year they leap!” If you can, fill your borders and let them mature before you start work on the house, don’t leave it until after. When we bought the house, the garden had been quite neglected, but you could tell that at some point it had really been loved. In fact, the garden was what swung it for us when buying the house, and we got an experienced tree surgeon in almost immediately to help tackle the trees and shrubs. There was a lot of severe pruning to try and salvage what we could. A huge camellia and a massive rhododendron just about made it (amongst other things), along with two mature fruit trees, an apple and a plum. After all that, though, the garden looked pretty bare. We were in the middle of the rip-out phase, the grass had taken a real beating, and everywhere was strewn with building materials and rubble. Starting on the borders and planting large shrubs was the last thing I felt like doing at the time, but we put in the work. Now, two years on, it just feels so mature and secluded in here and that early work really paid off. #garden #beforeandafters #fyp
