The D.C Snipers Who Hid in a Modified Car In October 2002, a true-crime case became one of the biggest manhunts in modern American history, drawing the FBI into a 23-day search across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo targeted people while they were doing ordinary things such as pumping gas, shopping, walking through parking lots, or arriving at school. During the main Beltway attacks, 10 people were k*ed and three others were critically injured**. One of the most unusual parts of the case was the vehicle they used. The pair traveled in a dark blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice that had been secretly modified. Metal behind the rear seat had been removed so someone could crawl into the trunk, while a small opening near the rear license plate allowed shots to be fired from inside the vehicle. Investigators later described the car as a “rolling sniper’s nest.” For weeks, schools changed routines, gas stations became places of fear, and hundreds of law-enforcement officers joined the investigation. The case became one of the most intense criminal investigations in recent U.S. history. The breakthrough came when investigators connected fingerprint evidence to Lee Boyd Malvo, who was 17 years old at the time. That connection eventually led authorities to Muhammad and their Chevrolet Caprice. Early on October 24, 2002, police located the vehicle at a rest area off Interstate 70 in Maryland. Muhammad and Malvo were found sleeping inside and were arrested without a struggle, bringing the 23-day manhunt to an end. The D.C. sniper case remains one of the most disturbing events in modern U.S. crime history, remembered both for the fear it created and for the massive investigation that eventually identified the two responsible.
