I think this is a very TikTok way of looking at a much more complicated issue. Reading books is valuable, and declining literacy rates are a real concern, but acting like someone’s opinions on movies, art, or culture suddenly don’t matter because they haven’t read a book in six months is arbitrary. People engage with long-form ideas through films, essays, journalism, documentaries, podcasts, research papers, and other forms of media. Reading is one way to develop critical thinking, not the only way. Also, saying there’s “no excuse” not to read ignores the reality that people have different circumstances, disabilities, work schedules, responsibilities, and access to books. Encouraging people to read more is one thing. Turning reading into a measure of whose opinions are worth listening to is another.
