During the discussion, Spielberg recalls how he and George Lucas auditioned a number of actors for Raiders of the Lost Ark before deciding that Tom Selleck was the right choice for the role. According to Spielberg, Selleck’s screen test was so strong that they offered him the part. However, an existing contract with CBS meant that when the network learned he had been cast, they accelerated production on Magnum, P.I., making him unavailable for the film. At the same time, Lucas was focused on finishing The Empire Strikes Back. After watching an early cut of the film and loving what he saw, Spielberg suggested Harrison Ford for Indiana Jones.
