why is caring about your appearance demeaning? i get what you're getting at but i don't think demeaning is the correct word tbh

everyones always saying "look good feel good" but who do y'all think instilled the idea that your mood and happiness should revolve around your attractiveness 💀

I saw a tiktok earlier of a woman going “we’re going to wear makeup this summer!!!” Like it was a revolutionary idea and I felt like I was going insane

as someone who got a nose job i agree lmao, i conformed to beauty standards and i still feel guilty. i was lowkey bullied for my nose, which started when i was 11, therefore i try to forgive myself BUT the insecurities still wont go away after artificially altering my face + its anti-feminist so i promised to myself that i will NEVER do anything like that again

My husband shaves/trims/waxes different areas of his body hair. It’s made me feel different about the “does shaving your legs actually feel good or is it patriarchal conditioning” argument used in feminist circles against women shaving. He’s not doing it out of obligation and neither am I. We both just sometimes prefer less hair somewhere.

Okay. But men under do beauty practices and hate themselves because of it. Cause as a guy you’re supposed to be an ugly slob that makes money. I also think that men and women would prefer to be like on some level like I woke up like this. But also, for women it’s degraded cause it’s a women’s activity, like if men where doing it no problem. Like how men are obsessed with sports. And it’s literally dangerous, or wars can be dangerous but it’s a guy thing. I think both things can teach you lots. But the gendering of it. Capitalism ruins everything. Like even though women play sports it’s still seen like mainly a guy thing like with beauty treatments. I think they’re all fun in moderation. I even think in group, having things for one gender to be on that in group is fine in moderation. It’s just that it becomes a trickier line. But if we don’t learn to fix what’s inside nothing we change on the outside will fully change. If I can add to this conversation.

Taking care of your appearance as a woman is not embarrassing or a sign of insecurity. Putting on make-up, having beautiful teeth & skin etc. all translate to better opportunities for us! $$$ Men find it embarrassing because they think physical attractiveness is / should be a female-only currency because they are LAZY.

Interestingly going to Turkey and doing your hair and teeth, like visibly, is a bit of a status symbol in certain UK circles of straight men. It's almost like the MAGA plastic surgery face where the point of it is less to fix an issue but more to flex and show you had the money for the procedure. It's not meant to look natural anymore. I think it is super interesting to watch when men's culture replicates these patterns we typically see in women's culture. Bit of an off topic and an exception doesn't take away from your general observation but idk I have nowhere to discuss this haha
