retired cleaner of 30+ years here......before you remodel ask your local cleaning lady. I helped many clients over the years with information they just dont think about when designing a home. I've even consulted builders.

Not that this “designer” will feel this way, but the more dinged up and discoloured marble gets, the better it looks. I love coming across pre-war spaces that have OLD marble, especially stairs. I’m aware it’s not safe, but I love when the treads have grooves in them from a century of feet going up and down. In my own old house, I deliberately chose butcher block countertops because I wanted them to get worn and dinged up. I like unlaquered brass because it becomes patina’d and I even have an appreciation for rust and hard water stains on old cast iron tubs. I want to live in a space that looks like it’s connected to human history. As long as things aren’t unsanitary I don’t mind wear/stains.
