this is why horror will always be the most culturally relevant genre. from home invasion, to satanic panic era etc, horror always reflects back on us as people regardless of what type of horror it is

I’m scared to watch obsession because it won’t be as good as backrooms

If you rely on jumpscares to make your movie “scary”.. you’re failing as a writer.

Obsession reminds me of AI because Bear wanted Nikki to be the “perfect girl” and it messed up a lot of things and didn’t know how to act like Nikki and it (the entity controlling Nikki) didn’t know how to act normal. just like AI messes up a lot of things and doesn’t know what real love is and works? Idk if that makes any sense. I know that isn’t that point of the movie I just thought I’d point it out

I’m so happy jump scares are getting phased out. I love psychological horror but I hate getting startled. I went to HHN once and I had to be ushered out in tears. (Blame my ex for demanding we went, hahaha) great take.

I’m so glad modern horror doesn’t rly use jumpscares bc as a horror enthusiast yes the jumpscares “scare” ppl but they don’t actually! Its normal for a human to get startled at a loud noise and jumpscare, but a jumpscare will never measure up to the amount of horror and dread you feel watching a phycological scene that makes you ask yourself questions

A lot of Gen Z horror relies on the uncanny, and I believe we have that fear of the uncanny as a leftover instinct to fear predators who use mimicry. We were taught our entire lives that we are at the top of the food chain, and Gen Z horror says "No, you're not. There is something out there that looks like you and sounds like you, but if it catches you it will consume you", which ties perfectly into those themes of patriarchy, late-stage capitalism and AI

do you think gen alpha is gonna have less of an instinctive reaction to ai / its uncanny vallry effects bc they're growing up with it being so prevelent and normal? is that kind of horror not going to hit the same for them bc thats how theyve always experienced the world? this vid made me wonder so now im asking you 🤣

Also the his name “bear” is sort of a metaphor for that famous question, the bear or the man?

backrooms was such a blatant reference to ai!!!! like how the same room got distorted within itself, its the same as feeding the same image to an AI over and over again.

Honestly these horror movies with demons and jumpscares aren’t scary. I only get startled because of the sudden loud music. I love this new genre of horror

I think the ai metaphor for backrooms is accurate because it will CONTINUOUSLY copy something until it's unrecognizable, and the entities are a part of that copying, only having the barebone traits. (i really like learning this stuff thanks for the vid)

I like that our generation is taking a more classic approach to horror. Jumpscares are just a quick cheap fright, but when a movie has you on the edge of your seat watching in abject terror you KNOW its scary.

In history, the most prominent horror represented society’s fears at the time. There were a lot of predictions about what it would be in this generation but those two nail it on the head!

obsession had such a good litte detail with ai with bear and nikki. nikki is a writer and so would naturally (most likely) steer away from ai, but bear is seen repeatedly using ai. which is why when they’re looking at an ai cartoon of themselves its just a little more of a hint that something is clearly wrong with this version of nikki. plus when nikki talks about her book bear doesn’t really listen to her

YES!! FINALLY SOMEONE WHO GETS IT!!! I havnt seen obsession yet, but yes, and also- the backrooms 100% is a spin on AI, you got the dog drawing metaphor, but the backrooms literally doesnt exist or create anything without gaining input from the outside world and humans. And that scene with Clark saying what if I dont want to change... NOT where I thought that scene was going, that statment was true horror.
