Inside every strand, keratin proteins are held together by covalent disulfide bonds that give your hair its structural integrity, and every chemical service breaks them. Olaplex holds 180 patents with 110 granted on this molecule, which is exactly why every other bond builder I cover relies on different chemistry. The active is bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate. Two aminopropyl ends grab two broken sulfur sites and pull them into a new disulfide bond, the diglycol chain reaches across the gap inside the cortex, and the dimaleate forms the new covalent crosslink. This was built by two PhD chemists in materials science, not a cosmetic chemist making a conditioning treatment. No.1 is almost pure active. No.2 carries that same active in a treatment base to finish the job. And before any of it, chelation, because mineral buildup blocks the active from penetrating where it needs to go.
