Oliver Tree Nickell (June 29, 1993 – June 14, 2026) was an American singer-songwriter, record producer, rapper, and filmmaker from Santa Cruz, California. He became a massive internet-era phenomenon by blending genre-defying music with a highly eccentric, satirical performance art persona.  What He Was Famous For? The
Oliver Tree Nickell (June 29, 1993 – June 14, 2026) was an American singer-songwriter, record producer, rapper, and filmmaker from Santa Cruz, California. He became a massive internet-era phenomenon by blending genre-defying music with a highly eccentric, satirical performance art persona.  What He Was Famous For? The "Look": Oliver was instantly recognizable by his signature bowl-cut hairstyle, oversized retro windbreakers, giant JNCO jeans, and tiny sunglasses. Viral Megahits: He achieved massive global stardom with tracks like "Alien Boy" (2018), "Life Goes On" (2021) which completely dominated TikTok, and the chart-topping "Miss You" (2022) with Robin Schulz.  Stunts and Directing: An avid scooter rider, he directed his own chaotic, multi-million dollar music videos. He famously set a Guinness World Record for building and riding the world's largest kick scooter.  The Ultimate Troll: Oliver treated his entire public life as a joke on the entertainment industry. He frequently staged public feuds, gave absurd interviews, and "retired" multiple times just to keep fans guessing where the character ended and reality began. His Musical Journey: Oliver grew up in a musical household, taking piano lessons at age three and playing in a ska-punk band as a teenager. He later produced dubstep under the moniker Tree and opened for acts like Skrillex. Seeking to merge comedy, film, and audio, he went on to study music technology at the California Institute of the Arts.  His major-label breakthrough came after his 2016 track "When I'm Down" went viral, landing him a contract with Atlantic Records. His debut studio album, Ugly Is Beautiful (2020), topped the Billboard Rock Albums chart.  A master of reinvention, he treated his career like a video game, introducing completely new personas for subsequent albums. He swapped his windbreaker for a neon- Stetson cowboy look for Cowboy Tears (2022) and transformed into a British fashion designer named Cornelius Cummings for Alone in a Crowd (2023). His final studio album, Love You Madly, Hate You Badly, was released in April 2026. On June 14, 2026, Oliver Tree tragically passed away at the age of 32 following a mid-air helicopter collision in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he was traveling during the South American leg of his world tour.
