@lnw8956: Mysuru Jathi 🪷 When did we begin to believe that certain movements are "Bharatanatyam" and others are not? What we call Bharatanatyam today is not an untouched ancient form... it is a carefully curated inheritance. In preserving, refining, and codifying, we also lost, altered, and forgot. Over time, a particular aesthetic became truth. Our bodies learnt it so deeply that anything outside it began to feel wrong. Recently, while learning Mysore Jathi, I realised I didn't quite bring out its Mysore-ness. I danced it the way I know how to. My torso and limbs are conditioned to move a certain way. It made me wonder: are we protecting tradition, or protecting our conditioning? Perhaps both. The reconstruction of Bharatanatyam gave us immense beauty and rigor. It also narrowed a much larger movement universe. We inherit both the gifts and the losses. Would I dance it differently next time? Only time will tell.
