👮 TAKING OVER WATCH: DON’T SKIP THESE CHECKS 👮 Examiner: "As OOW, what checks and procedures will you carry out when taking over the bridge watch?" **STCW A-VIII/2 + Bridge Procedures Guide. If you don’t know the situation, don’t take the watch.** **Pre-Takeover - Arrive 15 mins early:** 1. **Night Vision** - Adapt eyes 10-15 mins if at night 2. **Personal State** - Rested, not under influence, fit for duty **Takeover Checklist - 10 Points:** 1. **Position + Course** - Fix on chart/ECDIS, check COG, SOG, next waypoint, XTE 2. **Traffic Situation** - All radar/ARPA targets, AIS, visual targets, CPA/TCPA, risk of collision 3. **Speed + Engine Status** - Current RPM, standby engine notice, EOT in bridge control 4. **Gyro + Magnetic Compass** - Check heading, compare both, compass error applied 5. **Lookout Posted** - AB on watch, proper lookout maintained per Rule 5 6. **Nav Equipment** - Radar settings, ECDIS safety depth, alarms, echo sounder on + UKC 7. **Weather + Visibility** - Current + forecast, barometer trend, fog expected? 8. **Orders** - Master’s Night Orders + Standing Orders read, signed, understood 9. **Special Operations** - Any cargo ops, pilot station, drills, restricted areas ahead 10. **GMDSS + Comms** - Radios on correct channels, DSC test, nav warnings received **Final Step:** If not satisfied with any point → **Do NOT take over**. Call Master. If satisfied → Take over formally: "I have the watch" and log it. **Examiner Trap**: "You see a target 3 miles off. Take over?" A: No Sir. I will not take over until I have full appraisal of situation: bearing drift, CPA, TCPA, and actions of outgoing OOW. I must be fully aware before accepting responsibility. **Key oral line**: "I will satisfy myself that all navigational and safety requirements are met before taking over, Sir."
