I thought it was a metaphor for memory and how we get stuck in our heads reliving certain memories events on a loop, but they become more distorted over time. Clark was stuck in his head replaying that one night and living in his resentment of having to run the store until it literally consumes him.

It pisses me off so much when people say it only copies what enters the back rooms there are multiple times in the movie where they said that it copies everything that ever was and everything that ever will be whether it’s gone in the back rooms or not
