Yeah they did it so you wouldn’t refuse to do the job. I’ve had a guy say the mud/dirt was going to mess up his machine. I pulled out my pressure washer and did the same thing. He said he’d never thought to do that, he always just refused the work.

Maybe to help you not get mud,rocks,etc. stuck in your machine. pressure washing the stump costs a lot less than the machine and maybe they just wanted to help that not happen.

how did you know you'd be successful at this? did you do surveys in your area or talk to some contractors about getting work? these grinders are 20k-75k...id do this in a heart beat but I'm not paying that for one, not worth it in my area

Why did he remove the dirt around the roots that he wanted you to remove? Probably , because he didn't think you would do a very good job unless he helped you out. I only think this because you're confused by why he did something you should have done.

easy way to clear away the dirt so you actually grind all the roots and not just the stump. had to call the guy i hired to grind a stump back to donit again cause he missed alot of the roots and didnt go deep enough

Maybe he did it to reduce how much mud and rocks would get kicked out all over his yard. Looks like he keeps his place up well
