performing "normal" is exhausting and harmful for us, yet we've been trained to do it. 🥺

im sorry, i know it hurts when ppl dont believe you or dismiss u. When i was 5, i had back pain alot, my mom took me to dr, dr said i should be ashamed for complaining when football players aren't complaining, 2nd dr age 7 said growing pains, 3th dr age 10 said anxiety, i stopped telling ppl when i was in pain, i broke my arm at 10yrs old, dr had to rebreak it because i pretended it didnt hurt so my mom didng realize it was broke. I didnt make a sound, didnt cry scream nothing when he rebroke arm. i was scared too. now 47yrs old and still afraid tell drs how much pain im in. They did finally find out by age 25 i had Ankylosing Spondylitis, spinal stenosis, ddd and bone spurs.

Yep. I fake a smile, and learned to walk in a way that nobody notices.

That’s was the hardest part about going to work. I was afraid of people seeing how I was feeling from the outside so I acted like I was OK when I wasn’t and I pushed myself too hard and now I have to work from home because I performed for too long.

Sounds sooooo familiar! I was Born with chronic pain. (A spinal deformity) when I could talk I would tell my parents, family, teachers, etc that my legs and back hurt me. Everyone of them told me not to talk like that “people will think your Lazy “. So I learned to function and stopped talking. At 18 years old I took myself to Mayo Clinic. I had a miracle surgery (bone graft fusion). Then lived a great life for 30 years. Sadly 15 years ago the pain is back and there are no more miracle surgeries. So I live as you do now. I still consider myself lazy when I can’t bear the pain to get through activities.

There are very few people I talk about my chronic pain with ... I use “work” as an excuse for absences or times where I need to leave an event early… People seem to respect work, but not health issues… At least not mine…

I had a horrible car accident decades ago. Meds from pain management for many years. My mother told everyone I was on drugs and shouldn't be believed or trusted due to my drug usage. 😳 Im now 5 years no contact and Im drug and pain free today. I still am in disbelief and thrilled each and everyday.

My father practiced mind over matter so he expected others to overcome any health challenge. As an adult, when I talked about chronic pain he would tell me to 'Fix it!" Those expectations make dealing with pain so much harder. 🧠😬🥺

It’s beyond frustrating that you weren’t believed when you had a clear source of your chronic pain from a car accident! The bar for evidence and proof continues to be raised to impossible heights! 💙

💜💜 I can relate to this far too well. The saddest thing is is that if I had the support from people who cared about me… I would have a totally different outlook. 💜💜💜
