More than 33 years after 73-year-old Maxine Bitomski was found dead inside her Kittery, Maine, home, authorities say a major break in the cold case has led to an arrest. Family members discovered Bitomski’s body on January 16, 1993, and investigators determined her death was a homicide. For decades, the case remained unsolved, with few answers about who was responsible for the elderly woman’s killing. Now, police have arrested 59-year-old Daniel Jolly of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and charged him with murder. Investigators say advances in DNA technology and a renewed review of evidence helped identify Jolly, who allegedly knew Bitomski through a medical supply company that serviced her home. He remains in custody awaiting extradition as the investigation continues. Did DNA finally solve a 33-year mystery? Andrew Richard Lukehart was convicted in Florida for the 1997 death of his girlfriend’s 11-month-old son, Matthew. Prosecutors said the infant suffered fatal injuries while in Lukehart’s care, and afterward he allegedly attempted to cover up what happened by disposing of the child’s body in a pond. When the child was reported missing, investigators quickly focused on inconsistencies in Lukehart’s statements, and the autopsy findings showed injuries consistent with severe abuse rather than an accident. He was arrested, tried, and found guilty of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to death, and his case went through decades of appeals in the Florida court system, with his legal team repeatedly challenging the conviction and sentence. In 2026, the final round of appeals was rejected by the Florida Supreme Court in May, clearing the way for the state to proceed with the execution that had been scheduled under a death warrant. After all the legal avenues were exhausted, the sentence was carried out later that year. ❓Does this outcome feel like justice to you?
