its the same with the gameboy. if you put a cartridge in then it will show the nintendo logo. but if you dont put the cartridge and then turn it on, it will show a black rectangle around the place the nintendo logo was.

I know on the original game boy, the Nintendo logo was part of their attempt to prevent piracy. I forget the details but basically the Gameboy would check if the exact logo was on the cartridge, and if it was the game would play, if not you ended up stuck on the boot screen
