What you’re seeing isn’t guilt as humans understand it; dogs don’t have that cognitive ability. This is submission because the dog understands the cause-effect of “I did a thing, my human is upset, I’m worried about their response.” Very common misconception, but this isn’t actually guilt because guilt is a human emotion, not a dog one

My cat does show guilt, but more in the form of "oh shit, I'm sorry" when he lashes out bc overstimulation or something similar. Mainly because we are visibly and audibly upset. It doesnt happen often, but he's gonna be 10 this year and I've had him since he was a kitten. one of the only signs of any remote intelligence from him lol. I don't think it helps he was raised around dogs and only dogs the first few years of his life. He would growl at people at the door like our dogs lol.

I think my cat might actually feel something like guilt 😭 she’s not allowed on my mom’s bed. If the door is open she’ll still go on it but she’ll be wide-eyed staring at the door like this O^O waiting to get caught lol
