Been teaching and coaching for going into year 9 and I’ve never had a problem with this. Now, no I’m not just walking up and hugging students randomly but a side hug won’t get you in trouble. I understand the logic behind it but yea.

That’s a you problem then. If I’ve formed a solid relationship with that kid, especially as a coach/athlete, they are getting a hug if they want one or need one.

Good call. I am a male elementary school teacher, and I’ll maybe give a quick hug to younger kids. Fast side hug though. Once they hit 4th grade, we’re not hugging. The ones I give last about 2 seconds.

HS Male teacher. I was firm on the whole "No hugging" then I had this one student who whole heartedly loved my class because he recognized that even when classes get hectic, I still made a crazy effort to keep him on task and provide help. He loved that i always greeted him in the halls or kept reminding him to get to class when he would roam the halls. He said not one of his teachers did that except me, the admin, or his case manager. He said i was the ONLY teacher who cared about his learning. He said "at the end of the year you HAVE to give us a hug" I knew he only really meant give him a hug. I told him no many times because I don't hug students and never have hugged a student because it really makes me uncomfortable. Throughout the year he kept reminding me "at the end of the year, you have to give US a hug". I persisted with No. Then on the last day of school he says "It's the last day. Can I have a hug?....if you want to...I know you don't like hugs. Im ok if you say no." He definitely grew academically and mentally. How could I deny the fella a hug? So I said "you can hug me, I won't hug you".

This! As a male high school teacher I do not give out hugs at all. Never to any students at all, and only to colleagues who are not returning after the summer at their going away party, if I am cool with them.

I would most likely be like that in high school. My elementary kids wanna hug all day 😂 . I do have to teach them about boundaries though.
