Addressing investors, policymakers, and business leaders in Lagos, Governor Caleb Mutfwang presented a compelling vision for Plateau State's economic transformation, highlighting the state's growing reputation as one of Northern Nigeria's emerging investment destinations. Having moved from 29th position to the top 10 in Nigeria's ease of doing business rankings, Plateau is strategically leveraging public-private partnerships to unlock opportunities across three key sectors: Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining. In agriculture, the state is pursuing an ambitious plan to transform productivity and value addition. As Nigeria's leading producer of potatoes and one of the country's largest suppliers of fresh vegetables, Plateau is investing in seed multiplication, completing a long-awaited tissue culture laboratory, expanding cold-chain infrastructure, and strengthening access to markets for farmers. Building on lessons from the first phase of the African Development Bank's Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones Programme, Plateau has secured approval for Phase Two and acquired 500 hectares of land around the Yakubu Gowon Airport corridor, creating a new economic ecosystem designed to drive agro-processing, logistics, and exports. With an MOU already signed with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, plans are underway to transform the airport into a cargo hub, complemented by a dry inland port and a network of processing facilities. Groundbreaking for the state's first mid-processing centre is set to commence, marking another major step in the journey toward industrial-scale agricultural transformation. The state is also investing heavily in livestock development, with a new ultra-modern abattoir and a comprehensive strategy aimed at converting conflict into economic opportunity. From feedlots and fodder production to processing and export, Plateau is building a livestock value chain capable of serving domestic markets and exporting to international destinations, including the Middle East. Beyond agriculture, Plateau is positioning itself as a hub for tourism and health tourism, leveraging its unique climate, natural attractions, and ongoing investments in infrastructure and services. Governor Mutfwang's message was clear: Plateau is no longer a state of untapped potential,it is a state of emerging opportunities, strategic investments, and deliberate economic growth.
