I don’t understand why people put other people’s name on a mortgage or a deed of a property that they own. Never do that.

Do things work differently in the USA? If a mortgage is in joint names you need all parties to consent to any additional loans taken out against the property. I’m confused how he was allowed to do this without her legal consent & signing ?

My husband remortgaged our home four times. We married rather late, he was 43 and I was 41. Our mortgage was $200,000 in 2001. It's currently $250,000. He died unexpectedly in 2023. I had no control of what he did. He was a nightmare with credit cards and kept buying new cars. He saw me falling apart with worry and didn't care. I know I will have to sell before the mortgage renews in two years. What a great retirement.

Never ever let anyone else have access or control of your money. Even if you think it’s a good relationship. At the end of the day you have to look after you first.
