@kerstinj189: At the end of the day, sharing is kind—but it isn’t a requirement for being a caring child. We spend so much time teaching children to share that we often forget to teach equally important skills: setting boundaries, communicating their needs, respecting others’ choices, and engaging in meaningful play. A child who says, “I’m still using this,” isn’t being selfish. They’re communicating. A child who wants to continue building, creating, or exploring with a toy is deeply engaged in play—and that matters. Instead of forcing children to give something up simply because someone else wants it, we can teach patience, turn-taking when appropriate, and respect for the work and play of others. This is one of the reasons I love open-ended materials. There’s rarely just one “right” toy or one way to play, which naturally reduces conflicts and allows children to stay engaged longer.
