@kerstinj189: At the end of the day, sharing is kind—but it isn’t a requirement for being a caring child. We spend so much time teaching children to share that we often forget to teach equally important skills: setting boundaries, communicating their needs, respecting others’ choices, and engaging in meaningful play. A child who says, “I’m still using this,” isn’t being selfish. They’re communicating. A child who wants to continue building, creating, or exploring with a toy is deeply engaged in play—and that matters. Instead of forcing children to give something up simply because someone else wants it, we can teach patience, turn-taking when appropriate, and respect for the work and play of others. This is one of the reasons I love open-ended materials. There’s rarely just one “right” toy or one way to play, which naturally reduces conflicts and allows children to stay engaged longer. Sharing is kind. Boundaries are important. Communication is essential. And all of those skills deserve a place in childhood. #homedaycareprovider #daycareprovider #homedaycare #homedaycareowner

It's the turn taking that makes more sense. so many people are afraid to tell the other child " they are busy right now, let's ask if you can join in a few minutes or when he's done can he give you the ___?" I try a combination of strategies. the sharing is caring might be more appropriate for when a child brings a special snack to share with the class and everyone gets to try if they like. Children definitely need to learn boundaries and that sometimes no they cannot just take items from others ecslk it "sharing* That is actually the most common thing they go is say " he's not sharing with me" because they have an unrealistic view of what sharing is. they want the original child to on hand over the item immediately to get instant gratification but like you said the origiychikd just wants time to enjoy or experience the item. I usually just explain the situation and then help them trust that I'm there to help if they need help but it's time to give friends some space and time to play and then we'll see what we can play when they are done. in reality it's not a long wait usually they end up coming together in a more kind way. sorry so long... social skills are such a hugely overlooked area of development but it's a very important and complicated thing for Children 😊

Agree with everything, and for me, Boundaries is a must; the sooner your kids learn this, the sooner the better. It helps and prevents people pleasing.

I practice the same thing with my daycare kids. Once Susie is done playing with the toy, johny can then have the toy.

I also don't believe in sharing. I believe when a child is done that child may play with that toy or that item. i never tell a kid you have to stop playing to give your toy to someone else. when you're done with it, they can have it. and then when they're done and they give that toy to their friend, I say that was really kind of you

I tell my kids they need to take turns but that’s up to the child that had it first to give it up. I do not make them share anymore.
