Honestly, out of these three habits, the empty plate mentality is the hardest to break. It comes from how we were raised and it becomes deeply rooted in our eating behavior. Here are two simple solutions. If you are eating at home, save the leftovers for later and do not feel guilty. Even if they end up forgotten in the fridge, it is still better than forcing yourself to finish everything. If you have only two bites left, it is completely fine. You already ate almost all of your plate. Next time prepare a smaller portion. If you still feel hungry after, have a light snack. It is completely fine. If you are at a restaurant and you think that because you paid for the food you must finish it, remind yourself that next time you can simply order less. If the portion is too big, tell yourself that you are full and that you already got the value for your money. If you do not want to throw food away, ask for a doggie bag. Even Michelin star restaurants can give you one. There is nothing embarrassing about it. It is always better to take the rest home than to overeat.
