If it's any consolation, the emphasis on "building relationships" at least means there's some effort to acknowledge those kids. But as far as peer-to-peer, I think part of the problem is that many teachers are very outgoing and haven't dealt with social anxiety (which makes sense given the demands of the job) so it never occurs to them to intervene. Frankly, I wouldn't WANT a lot of them to intervene because of that lack of understanding! I'm secondary so IDK about elementary, but we don't get any training on how to encourage positive relationships between kids other than by our own modeling and classroom rules. Any training we get is about how WE treat kids.

In one of the classes I had during my final year of highschool there was a teacher I had and in that class she gave every student a small notebook where students could write stuff in it and at the end of the day we'd leave the notebooks in her class and she'd leave notes in our notebook if we wrote down any questions and stuff like that in it by the next day in class and I liked that method as someone who sometimes preferred written communication

I told my mom I want to be tested or screened (idk what the process is) for social anxiety and she straight up laughed at me. I promise I have it but no one cares enough to try to get me a diagnosis, not even my own mother who acts like she knows me better than I do.

It's because the socially anxious kid isn't disruptive and often times does their work and gets good or at least decent grades. Schools focus so much on kids who are loud and disruptive and kids who are failing, but the quiet and compliant kids often get overlooked because the teachers think they are doing fine as long as they get good grades. I share the opinion that having a social life as a teenager is more important than getting good grades. Your grades matter for getting into a good college or going into the workforce immediately after high school, but mean basically nothing 1-2 years after you graduate. Friendships and social skills matter for the rest of your life

it’s because they are often quiet and non-disruptive. behaviors in schools today are so prevalent and often so disruptive that a quiet student who does their work but maybe is socially stunted is not the immediate problem compared to a screaming kid or a disruptive one. unfortunately, they slip through the cracks because teachers can still teach others with them but can’t with the disruptive students
