The Zulu people are part of the larger Nguni-speaking peoples of Southern Africa. Origins and Migration The ancestors of the Zulu migrated southward over many centuries as part of the broader Bantu migrations from regions of west-central Africa, likely near present-day Cameroon and Nigeria. Between about 1000 and 1500 years ago, Bantu-speaking communities moved gradually through eastern and central Africa into what is now South Africa. The Nguni peoples settled along the eastern side of Southern Africa, particularly in present-day KwaZulu-Natal. Formation of the Zulu Nation The Zulu were originally a small clan founded by Zulu kaMalandela in the 17th century. In the early 19th century, Shaka kaSenzangakhona transformed the small clan into a powerful kingdom through military and political reforms. Under Shaka, the Zulu Kingdom expanded dramatically and became one of the most influential states in Southern Africa. Traditional Homeland The historic homeland of the Zulu people is the region now known as: KwaZulu-Natal Areas around the Tugela River and Mhlathuze River In Summary The Zulu people did not originate in KwaZulu-Natal itself. Their distant ancestors were part of the Bantu migrations that moved from Central and West Africa over many centuries. The Zulu nation as we know it developed in KwaZulu-Natal and was unified and expanded under King Shaka in the early 1800s
