@christchronicles4: WE WOULD RATHER HAVE NO GRADUATION THAN HAVE NO CHILDREN! We would rather have our children graduate late than bury them early. We would rather have a nation with delayed examinations than a nation holding funerals for students who should still be alive. We would rather have children with D's and E's because safety measures interrupted learning than have no children at all. What is the value of a school calendar if the very children it exists to serve cannot safely return home to their parents? This is why my view is immediate and unequivocal: all boarding school dormitories that do not meet the required safety standards should be temporarily closed until the necessary corrective measures are implemented. Our hearts cannot help but feel the pain, grief, and anguish of the parents and families who lost their daughters in the tragic Utumishi Girls Academy fire on that fateful Thursday morning. No words can adequately comfort a parent who sends a child to school expecting education and safety, only to receive the devastating news of their death. Yet, beyond the tributes, condolences, and moments of silence, we must confront a difficult truth:Kenya has been here , many times before. And this tragedy must never be allowed to happen again over causes that can be prevented. incidents have occurred under different circumstances, one recurring challenge has remained constant: Fire! whether caused by arson, negligence, electrical faults, or other accidents. Time and again, dormitories have become death traps instead of places of rest and safety for students. This should deeply trouble us. Hotels, offices, shopping malls, and other facilities routinely install fire detectors, alarms, emergency exits, and extinguishers to protect their guests. How much more should we do for our children, the next generation entrusted with the future of our nation? If a single individual can grow up to influence the lives of 58 million Kenyans, what impact might 192 young lives have had on our society? Among those lost were future doctors, teachers, engineers, innovators, leaders, entrepreneurs, pastors, and nation-builders. Their potential was extinguished before it could fully serve humanity. Now that we know the problem and where it exists, action must replace rhetoric. I appeal to the Government of Kenya, the Ministry of Education, school boards, and all relevant institutions to temporarily close boarding school dormitories that do not meet basic safety standards until urgent measures are implemented. These measures should include mandatory installation of fire detectors, smoke alarms, and fire extinguishers in every dormitory; removal of window grills that trap students during emergencies; establishment of clearly marked emergency exits and escape routes; redesigning dormitory doors to open outward so that students can escape quickly during stampedes and emergencies; regular fire drills and safety training; routine inspections by independent safety authorities; and the implementation of any additional measures necessary to secure dormitories and other high-risk areas within learning institutions. We must accept collective responsibility and act immediately. Every delay places more children at risk. The greatest tribute we can offer the victims of Utumishi, Endarasha, Kyanguli, Bombolulu, St. Kizito, and every other school tragedy is not another speech or memorial or hateful political exchanges.
