Sheila E. Says One Extra Drumbeat Made Marvin Gaye Yell at His Band, So She Blamed Her Brother Sheila E. is looking back on the time she accidentally irked Marvin Gaye. The 68-year-old percussionist shared the story on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Music Makes Us podcast, airing Tuesday, Oct. 20. She was part of a 24-piece band on Gaye’s 1983 Sexual Healing tour. She had also gotten her brother, Peter Michael, 65, onto the tour. During rehearsal, the band started playing “What’s Going On.” Sheila says it got everyone grooving. “The whole band started dancing,” she recalled. Then she hit an extra drum. She describes Gaye as “soft-spoken,” “sweet,” and “kind.” But he heard it right away. “He yelled in the mic. No one had heard him yell,” she said. He turned around and said, “Somebody hit an extra beat.” Nobody spoke up. Sheila says her “heart was beating so loud.” Then she raised her hand and said, “Sorry, Mr. Gaye. I’m so sorry. My brother will never do that ever again.” Peter Michael went along with it. “’Cause I got him the gig. He owed me,” she said. Peter Michael has told his own side of how he got on the tour. He said there was no official job for him at first, so he just kept showing up to rehearsal. He said Gaye later insisted, “Peter Michael has to be in this band.” The tour was Gaye’s last. He was sh*t by his father in April 1984 at age 44. Sheila told the Guardian in 2024 that the moment taught her a crucial lesson: “know when not to play.” Have you ever taken the fall for someone? #SheilaE #MarvinGaye #Tour #Music #Rock
