Surfing is like if there were 100 skate parks for 1000000 skaters, most of whom don’t know etiquette

cause skateboarding is well harder an the respect u get going days on end learning a trick it just a respect thing surfers think they own the waters an not only that it's not hard u rlly only get credit big wave surfing other then that mid sportsmanship

skaters who's spend a whole bunch of time at the skate park have watched someone work on that same trick for an hour. when they make it people see the progression so they get hyped for each other. when there are enough surfers waves get more limited faster than time on an obstical at the skate park, so surfers keep to themselves. the less crowded the more people are friendly. surfing around Perth more agro than down at Margs, and even less agro than east coast of US. but it gets agro when there is only one spot and 50 people are packed into one takeoff spot. I like to cheer on a good wave when I see it no matter who it is!

As a new surfer it’s so embarrassing and frustrating

Same welcoming in the ski/snowboard culture too. Surf culture is so odd to me

Totally. This is so true. Surfed when I was younger. Picking it back up again as an adult and definitely feel like it’s isolating.

surfing has to be the most toxic and unfriendly sport there is. i wish i had known 15 years ago and i could have spent that time wind/kite surfing and could have actually made some friends

Also there is no localism in skate culture. You would never get cussed out or told to leave for going to a new skatepark. Also if you accidentally get in someone’s way no one will try and fight you. People just say sorry

Localism is the problem and the local purple circle. Go to a break midweek when the clan ain't all together. Very supportive and social. Just have fun and not worry about it. Heaps of great people out on the water.

i feel this way about standard gyms vs climbing gyms. i found climbing gyms so much less intimidating and judgmental. i felt instantly welcomed into the community bc we all share the same hobby and passion

This video is funny! If you dont understand surfing is depending on the waves which are controlled by mother nature vs a skate park with ramps buikd out of stone hahaha

I’ve skated for years and have just gotten into surfing. It’s like no one wants to make friends out there

I guess it’s because there’s a limited number of waves, unlike a skatepark where the ramps stay there all day, every day. As a beginner, you definitely feel that pressure. Sometimes it feels like nobody really wants you to improve, because eventually you’ll start taking “their” waves.

I do agree that some line ups are scary. But I surf Kirra heaps and I'm known by the local crew, if I catch a wave and they can see me, they hype me up so much. Whistling, yelling, clapping and this is even if its a trash wave. Best feeling, but I wish it was a more common occurence for everyone out there.

It’s because they want the surf for themselves and it means less people in the water🥲

Cause the park is always there no matter what, surfing relies heavy on timing, forecasting, luck, and experience, also there’s a lot more than just doing tricks you have to paddle duck dive stay on position no time to watch others

Great post. I’ve been surfing 25 years, but started late at 27. Now, at 52, starting to slip just a little and get no breaks from the younger surfers in the lineup. I love surfing, but I’ve grown to not love surfers.
