so this isn't all that correct. rencontrer means to find yourself in the presence of/before someone on purpose per the dictionary. a synonym is croiser for example, to cross paths. the reason it's often used for "to meet someone for the first time" is because basically rencontrer is about making yourself known to someone else, which is a definition that could be interpreted for meeting someone for the first time
