I love the proverbs, and then some context this is very true but not every context — Paul wrote to Philemon (referring to Onesimus; 17So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. 18If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me. 19I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand. I will pay it back—not to mention that you owe me your very self.

Proverbs 17:18 is a classic warning against co-signing a loan or guaranteeing someone else's debt. 🚨In ancient times, "shaking hands in pledge" was the legal equivalent of signing a contract. The verse says doing this shows a "lack of sense" because you take on 100% of the financial risk for someone else's choices. It contrasts perfectly with the famous verse right before it (Proverbs 17:17) about true friendship. The takeaway? If a friend is in trouble, it's better to give them a gift you can afford rather than co-signing a loan that could ruin your own finances and destroy the friendship. 🤝💸

NLT reads “It’s poor judgment to guarantee another person’s debt or put up security for a friend.” Not the same thing at all.

“A man devoid of understanding shakes hands in a pledge, And becomes surety for his friend.” Proverbs 17 : 18 NKJV here’s a great translation of this verse. a man “devoid” which means lacking in understanding, shakes hands in a pledge or agreed to with words or signing. Jesus understood the assignment “ISAIAH 53” confirmed that for those trying to misquote this verse about Jesus.

yeah, this passage is more about ancient "co-signing" or "pledging your name" rather than just "paying a debt". though similar, it's enough of a difference to clarify.
