@mclamagna: Being in constant contact for work is … honestly fine? This is a controversial take, and I’m open to hearing why I will probably regret it 🙃 Is this because I’m a millennial #worklifebalance #corporatelife #founderlife
Gen X here: I think we need to find a balance between Gen Z “no one can talk to me past 4:57 pm” and Millennial “I am available whenever.” Because I learned SO MUCH and had great success when I was available every second … but I burned out hard and it took a long time to recover. The second I wanted space and personal time, people got angry with me. I’ve found much better balance now, but I broke myself for years and I will never get that time back.

I think it’s fine until it’s not fine. And then the second it’s not fine, you’ve established a practice where it’s been fine for so long without setting boundaries now completely reshapes the way you work. You become the bad guy after being the good guy for so long. So being 100% available when you have the spoons to be 100% available means that you’re going to be expected to be 100% available regardless of your spoons.

Hmmm .. I think I agree with your point but not necessarily the way you're stating it. It's not about constant contact but about flexible working. I don't want the ability of others to contact me at any time, but I definitely do like the ability to work on a schedule that can be adjusted to my day-to-day energy levels, appointments, and other considerations.

Eh, if it works for you it works for you. Do it until it doesn’t work anymore. Dont over think it.

I absolutely love to be in constant contact because then I can flex my schedule around my kids. Can’t get everything done in my 9-5? That’s ok. I’m always working a bit. But I also know when I’m getting burnt out and know when to take a step back.

Is it possible that you may have an urgency addiction? I do. As with other addictions, realizing and admitting it is the first step to empowerment!

Same but there’s a difference imo between doing this for your own biz / when you’re an entrepreneur vs when you work for a company

I’m a millennial and I don’t align to this, and neither do the people in my circles, so I’m not sure it’s a generational thing. But I AM in a job with clients and I do feel an obligation to be responsive. Maybe it’s profession-specific?

Millennial, I was where you were but realized the expectation of doing all the work was the root of my work issues. It moved away from “I’ll just do it now bc I’ll have to do it later” to “I can’t do it all, so something is going to have to slide/stop/not be at my 100% effort” etc. much healthier for me,but you do you!

I have a different relationship with this as a founder versus as an employee/manager/director of a company. If I get to own my time and flex it to work for me, I can also be more flexible with when messages are coming in. Some boundaries still need to apply so what we do simply do not become “bare minimum” in their view.

I think as a founder, this makes sense and I don’t mind it at all. I prefer it bc I make my own schedule. Sometimes it’s easier to answer things quickly.

I used to be exactly like that and it didn’t bug me either…until perimenopause hit… then it all went sideways, I couldn’t recover and switch back and forth btwn personal and work mode as fast. It tired me faster. Gawd it messed w my head! Oof. If I had a redo, that’s probably the one thing I’d do differently-I’d create boundaries earlier and take a deeper look at the emotional and mental payoff that constant availability was giving me. Hope that makes sense! 🙏💗
